Consistently voted as one of the best suburbs to raise a family in Arizona, the city of Chandler is home to more than 250,000 people. The city offers a breath of fresh air for people who want to move away from the hustle and bustle of large metropolitans but still have access to ample business opportunities and jobs.

The city was established as a township in 1912 by Dr. Alexander John Chandler, a veterinary surgeon who bought up land to study modern irrigation techniques. The founding of the Williams Air Force Base in 1941 resulted in a population surge of 3,800 people by the 1950s.

Later, with the establishment of Intel, Microchip, and Motorola manufacturing plants, the population grew to more than 30,000 by the 1980s. The city further saw massive growth through the next few decades and was even ranked among the fastest-growing municipalities in the US.

Climate

Being a major city in Arizona, Chandler also has a desert-type of climate. The summer months of June-August are hot, with the July highs being an average of 105 degrees Fahrenheit.  With 1.2 inches of annual rainfall, August ranks as the wettest month in the state, while June marks the driest.

The winter months of December-February are cold and dry, with January lows of 41 degrees.

The months of March, November, and February are generally the most pleasant, with moderate temperatures and sporadic periods of rainfall.  There is rarely any snowfall in Chandler and thus ranks among the least snowy places in the state.

Education

Most of the primary through secondary educational needs of Chandler is served by the Chandler Unified School District. Elementary schooling is served by the Kyrene Elementary School District located west of Loop 101. The Tempe Union High School District, the Mesa Public Schools, and the Gilbert Public Schools are spread across the city and offer quality secondary education.

The Chandler-Gilbert Community College offers associate degrees in more than 60 disciplines and serves nearly 15,000 students from Chandler and Gilbert. In addition, for-profit institutions like the University of Phoenix and the Western International University caters to online education and niche subjects.

With less than an hour’s drive from the city center, Arizona State University is the most prominent post-secondary educational institution in the state. The highly research-oriented institution offers undergraduate degrees in more than 350 programs ranging from engineering to legal studies.

Public Transportation

Regular bus services largely serve public transportation and the 72, 81, 96, 112, and 156 routes.

In addition, a commuter rail transportation system has been proposed by the Arizona Department of Transportation along the I-10 highway. It is a major part of the Arizona Passenger Rail Corridor Study (APRCS).

The Chandler Municipal Airport, located in the city center, serves as the city’s most important general aviation airport. On the other hand, most commercial air traffic is handled by the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which is an hour and a half’s drive away from the city.

Living in Chandler

The sunny weather throughout the year, affordable living, an abundance of amenities makes Chandler an excellent place to settle down.

Microchip Technologies, Isagenix, Bashas’, and Rogers are the major employers of Chandlerites. Being very close to the state capital, Chandler has plenty of business opportunities in the marketing and retail sectors.

The city’s average home prices fall within the $300k-350k range, while the average rent prices go as high as $1,400. There are plenty of neighborhoods in the city, with subdivisions offering waterfront property, beautiful parks, and other amenities.

Things to Do in the City

Despite developing a reputation as a tech and innovation hub, Chandler offers a whole host of fun things to do while in the city. Downtown chandler is packed with a host of eateries, bars, entertainment centers, and tourist hot spots.

The Chandler Center for Arts serves as the major entertainment center hosting various events and performances, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, GRAMMY winners and nominees, and upcoming artists.

Outdoor activities are served by the San Marcos Golf Course, which was Arizona’s first grass course, and the Veterans Oasis Park for hiking, picnic, and biking activities.

Cultural centers like the Chandler Museum and the Arizona Railway Museum encapsulate the city’s rich history with world-class art exhibits and accurate historical recreations. These places also run tailor-made tourist and family tours and serve as major tourist attractions in the city.
